Kay West didn’t intend to open an art sales gallery in Spokane. She had been busily engaged in making her own art and participating in other art organizations.

That being stated, after living in Spokane for five years and watching the changing and challenging visual arts scene, West was motivated to become part of the solution.

She saw the literary community gain a toehold and launch into developing a solid Spokane identity as home to notable writers and poets. With the increase in people moving to Spokane from Seattle, Portland, California, to name just a few, it was just a matter of time before their expectations of culture including music, performance, literature and visual arts would generate a response to meet that desire.

LITTLE DOG Art Gallery offers monthly changing art shows, usually based on themes. As the themes and subject matter of the shows change, so do the artists who exhibit their work at LITTLE DOG. Most of the painters, photographers, mixed media and fiber artists, glass artists and ceramists are local and regional artists. However, West also includes work from artists outside of Washington. It’s her intent to showcase local artists, but she likes to shake things up a bit by offering works of art that have never been seen elsewhere in Spokane before. LITTLE DOG offers an eclectic mix of styles and subject matter.

In the time LITTLE DOG Art Gallery has been open and serving the community, there has been an increase of gallery visitors from Spokane Valley and South Hill. It is seen as LITTLE DOG’s reputation reaching out beyond the confines of the Garland District. The gallery has also been a draw for visitors from outside of Spokane and Washington.
